Fall CSA

When does the season start? How long will it last?

The Fall season starts the first week of September and runs through December. The Fall shares last for a total of 16 weeks.

What can I expect in each week's box?

As a member of Crawford Organics CSA your weekly box will contain an assortment of in-season fresh vegetables. Each standard size box will contain between 7 and 9 items each week. The quantities are designed for 2-4 people, depending on menu preferences. Each mini size box will contain 5 or 6 items in quantities for 1-2 people. The box may not supply all your vegetable needs, depending on your normal vegetable consumption.

Lettuce, leafy greens, potatoes, and brassicas (broccoli, cauliflower, etc.) will come more frequently as the Fall progresses. Summer crops (green beans, tomatoes, peppers, etc) will likely be in the boxes somewhat regularly till October (depending on when the first frost comes). Fall items (winter squash, sweet potatoes, turnips, etc.) will be in the boxes as they come into season.

The following list gives you an idea of when our crops are harvested. Some of these items you will find in your box frequently and others only once or twice. Because we are working with living plants and the unpredictability of weather, there is no guarantee of the exact type or quantity of produce you will receive each week.

Beets, Boc Choi, Broccoli, Carrots, Cauliflower, Chard, Cilantro, Garlic, Assorted Herbs, Kale, Leeks, Lettuce, Onions, Parsley, Peppers, Potatoes, Radishes, Scallions, Shallots, Spinach, Sweet Potatoes, Tomatoes, Winter Squash

What if I go on vacation?

If you plan to be away certain weeks in the fall, and you can let us know when you sign up; we will deduct $38 for each week you will be gone ($27 for the mini share). If after you sign up, you realize you will be away some week; there will be no refunds, but you may either have a neighbor pick up your box for you, or you may cancel your box and receive a credit. That credit can be used on another delivery date. Credits must be used by the end of the season unless other arrangements are made.

To make a change to your delivery schedule, you must give us one week advance notice by either e-mail or phone.

We harvest an exact amount of produce for each week’s boxes. Therefore if you fail to pick your box up within the designated time without informing us in advance; we will donate it to a worthy recipient.

Other additional Shares:

Eggs

We also offer eggs from pastured hens. The hens have daily access to roam the fresh grass around their portable house. These hens are not organic, but are fed a 100% GMO free diet. The fresh grass, exercise, and sunshine makes for happy hens. The egg yolks are a rich golden color and taste good.

While the hens roam, the roosters keep a watchful eye. They are also constantly on the lookout for something good to eat. When one finds something, he will cluck and scratch to tell the hens "over here!" When a hawk (or airplane, sparrow, or shadow) flies past, he gives his warning squawk "everyone to cover!" Then he will stand in the open ready to defend his hens. Once everyone is safe, only then will he also go to shelter. Yet even then, he stands at the doorway ready to defend his charge.

A share of eggs consists of one dozen every week.

Fruit

Our fall fruit share contains 2 varieties of apples or pears per week for 12 weeks from October through December.

Yogurt

We offer yogurt from Seven Stars Farm in Kimberton, PA. Their yogurt is made from certified organic whole milk without flavorings or thickeners. It is a very good, creamy textured yogurts with a mild flavor. The cows that produce milk for the yogurt are kept on pasture whenever the weather is suitable. When the weather isn't suitable, the cows are fed quality hay and a small amount of grain and minerals. The grain makes up approximately 1% of their total dietary intake.

A share consists of one quart of plain yogurt per week.
