Winter CSA

Last winter we provided CSA members with 18 weeks of produce from January to April. It was exciting to see the crops growing under the protection of unheated greenhouses, tunnels and row covers. We are trying to revive the lost art of harvesting produce in the winter months. There is something satisfying about the quality of cold loving plants grown in the cold. They have a sturdy look about them. We were very pleased with the produce that we could provide last winter and we are looking forward to growing it again.

When does the season start? How long will it last?

The Winter season has two different start dates: The Early Start Winter begins the 5th of November and continues to the first of May (a total of 26 weeks (There won't be any delivery on the week of December 22nd). This Early Start option is for customers who aren't currently part of our Fall CSA.

For those who are a part of our Fall CSA, We offer the Standard Winter shares. These begin the first of January and also continue to the first of May (a total of 18 weeks).

What can I expect in each week's box?

As a member of Crawford Organics Winter CSA you will receive a weekly box with an assortment of in season fresh vegetables. Each box will contain an average of 8 items. The quantities are designed for 2-4 people, depending on menu preferences. The box may not supply all your vegetable needs, depending on your normal vegetable consumption.

Our farm share consists of fresh greens (kale, chard, lettuce, salad mix); cold loving items like carrots, radishes, leeks, and scallions; and storage items such as potatoes, squash, and garlic.

The following list gives you an idea of when our crops are harvested. Some of these items you will find in your box frequently and others only once or twice. Because we are working with living plants and the unpredictability of weather, there is no guarantee of the exact type or quantity of produce you will receive each week.

What if I go on vacation?

If you plan to be away certain weeks in the winter, and you can let us know when you sign up; we will deduct $23/week you will be gone. If after you sign up, you realize you will be away some week; there will be no refunds, but you may either have a neighbor pick up your box for you, or you may pick up two boxes one week and skip the previous or subsequent week. To double a week and skip one, you must give us one week advance notice by either e-mail or phone.

We harvest an exact amount of produce for each week’s boxes. Therefore if you fail to pick your box up within the designated time without informing us in advance; we will donate it to a worthy recipient.

Other additional Shares:

Eggs

Please Note: We are taking a one year break between flocks of our pastured laying hens. We won't have our pastured organic eggs till the Winter season of 2013.

We also offer certified organic eggs from our pastured hens. The hens have daily access to roam the fresh grass around their portable house. The fresh grass, exercise, and sunshine makes for happy hens. The egg yolks are a rich golden color and taste good.

While the hens roam, the roosters keep a watchful eye. They are also constantly on the lookout for something good to eat. When one finds something, he will cluck and scratch to tell the hens "over here!" When a hawk (or airplane, sparrow, or shadow) flies past, he gives his warning squawk "everyone to cover!" Then he will stand in the open ready to defend his hens. Once everyone is safe, only then will he also go to shelter. Yet even then, he stands at the doorway ready to defend his charge.

A full share of eggs consists of one dozen every week. While a part share is one dozen every other week.
